Why call it Erectile Dysfunction and not Impotence?

Erectile dysfunction is commonly known as impotence to the general public. The word impotence is laden with heavy, negative connotations and does not describe accurately the physical problem.

Male Erectile Dysfunction accurately describes the physical problem of men not being able to achieve an erection sufficient for penetration during sexual intercourse.

Note that men who suffer from male sexual dysfunction may not achieve an erection sufficient for penetration but may well be fertile, have a normal sex drive and the ability to achieve orgasm and ejaculate.

Erectile Dysfunction and Penile Erection

Penis and Penile Erection

The penis contains three chambers, two chambers which run along the length of the penis, called corpora cavernosa and one chamber on the bottom, called corpora spongiosis.

Chambers inside the penis are filled with spongy tissues which contain smooth muscles, fibrous tissues, veins, arteries, and spaces.

The chambers are surrounded by tunica albuginea, an elastic membrane.

Penile erection occurs with mental arousal and physical stimulation. Expectation and excitement of making love cause the smooth muscles of the corpora cavernosa to relax, allowing blood to flow and fill the penis causing penis enlargement. Tunica albuginea traps the blood by compressing the veins, maintaining the penile erection.

Erectile Dysfunction and Penile Erection

Achieving and maintaining a sexually stimulated erection is a sequence maintained by a complex interplay between blood vessels and nerves.

Persistent disruption to achieving and maintaining a penile erection will result in impotence.

Impotence or erectile dysfunction is experienced due to disruption in nerves impulses between the brain, spinal cord, penis and malfunction in the smooth muscles, tissues, veins and arteries near the corpora cavernosa.
